Error description

  • During the restore of a VMware virtual machine, the restore may
    fail with:

    09/03/2013 15:51:40 ANS9365E VMware vStorage API error for
    virtual machine 'SGHQVCTR01'.
       TSM function name : visdkCreateVM
       TSM file          : vmvisdk.cpp (4897)
       API return code   : 67
       API error message : A specified parameter was not correct.

    09/03/2013 15:51:40 ANS5250E An unexpected error was
    encountered.
       TSM function name : vmCreateNewVmMachine
       TSM function : Can not create virtual machine
       TSM return code   : 4389
       TSM file          : ..\..\common\vm\vmcommonrestvddk.cpp
    (822)
    09/03/2013 15:51:40 ANS9404E Error creating the specified
    Virtual Machine. See log files for more information.

    This problem will normally occur when restoring virtual
    machine which is a vCenter. The virtual machine configuration
    property "guestinfo.vf.tc.clientLicenseState" causes the
    failure of creating virtual machine during restore. This
    property indicates the information written by the client
    when a VM vFabric component comes online, and it places a
    message into guestinfo. This is later used by the vFabric
    server. Thus, every time vFabric component will be started,
    this value will be written to this key/value pair by the
    client.

    This key/value pair is not important from
    backup/restore perspective and should be omitted in Tivoli
    Storage Manager for Virtual Environment datamovers.
    This information was recently published in a Microsoft
    KB article: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.d

Local fix

  • 1. Use "testflag VMBACKUP_SAVE_LOCAL" in the dsm.opt file to
    generate and save an OVF file for restoring the virtual machine.
    The OVF file will be created in the VMBACKDIR directory that is
    defined in the dsm.opt file

    2. Remove the key/pair of following section of of the .ovf file:

    <Item tsm:id="30">
    <extra:key>guestinfo.vf.tc.clientLicenseState</extra:key>
            <extra:value>
    ...
    </extra:value>
          </Item>

    3. Append "_test" to the name of the ovf file. For Example :
     <orig ovf name>_test.ovf

    4. Repeat the restore with "testflag VMRESTORE_OVF_OVERRIDE"
    specified in the dsm.opt file.

    The testflag will cause the restore to look for the OVF file
    with _test as part of the name.
